A visual experiment based off of the principles of information design and borrowing from the aesthetic of navigational charts, the tidal series explores the tidal region off the southern coast of Tybee Island, GA. As an area where many drownings and rescues happen, the numbers, which would traditionally represent depth in a navigational chart, refer to a legend which employs statistically relevant information (depth, drownings, number of yearly rescues, height of tides, etc). By mixing the photographic narrative with the statistical information and separating the legend from the images, a multilayered complexity is achieved forcing the viewer to engage intently to understand the dangers posed by the tidal region. Please click to view full-sized digital file.
